Kingdom Family Devotional - Tony & Jonathan Evans

ISBN 978-1-58997-855-3

Hardcover

This has been a wonderful devotional. Of course, I read through it in a couple of days, and not taking the time to truly explore the wealth that is within does not give me an advantage, but rather a disadvantage when doing book reviews.

Especially a good devotional for those with young children. Activities are included to help you talk to children of any age. Fifty-two weeks of devotionals, with five days of each week devoted to family Bible study. (Where were you when my children were young, and I tried to adapt Our Daily Bread for my youngsters?) Each week is devoted to a single subject, with each of the five lessons expounding on the subject of the week.

What a great team Evans and Evans makes in this series of devotions. After completing the devotional, I have now re-started it reading daily on my own since my children are all grown and live away.

This is one book I highly recommend!
I give it five stars.
And a big thumbs up!

Lincoln on Leadership for Today - Donald T. Phillips

Lincoln on Leadership for Today
Abraham Lincoln's Approach to 21st Century Issues
by
Donald T. Phillips
Copyright ©2017 Donald T. Phillips
Houghton, Mifflin Harcourt Publishing, New York
308 pages including Notes and Bibliography

A very interesting read. It kept me turning the pages, which says a lot for any book these days.

Phillips brought Lincoln alive as he tackled the problems of the 1850's until his assassination, and then compared them to nearly identical political, econo-sociological issues of today.

Lincoln faced many of the same issues that we are facing today. A country in dissent, a failing economy, and poor foreign relations. And yet, he somehow managed to get this country through a civil war, with a mind frame that we would be reunited and act as a united front against all enemies.

By looking at Lincoln, and how he handled many issues of his day, we can readily see how this country can get back on it's feet, and be abundant once more.

I will hope our new President of the United States will take the time to read this very fascinating book, and perhaps learn from the lessons that Abraham Lincoln taught us.

I rate this book....
Five Stars

The Bully-Proof Workplace - Dean and Shepard

The Bully-Proof Workplace
Essential Strategies, Tips, and Scripts for Dealing with the Office Sociopath

McGraw-Hill Education

While I have never been bullied on a job, I have seen others. At those times, I was not in an authoritative position to step in and make a difference. And so I didn't. I wish, now, that I had this book under my belt way back then! I hope the powers that be make this subject mandatory for anyone seeking a degree in business management! It would make a HUGE difference in the workplace for so many!

The authors state that bullying in the workplace has become a crisis. This I can believe. You can't get on any of the social media sites and not see where someone is being bullied. Even for something as commonplace as bad grammar, their beliefs, their political stance, and so much more!

Especially in America, while a global problem, bully's are not having enough of a consequence to pay for their actions and words to inspire individuals to stop. And until action is taken against bullying in this country, we aren't going to see a change. (I saw on one media site where a 14-year old hung himself last week because he was bullied at school.)

First, we need to teach our children. Inspire them to ignore the bullying remarks. And how do we do this? We start off with the kind of parenting that builds up our children, and doesn't leave them vulnerable to bullying. A bully can't succeed unless we let him/her.

Beginning with what the crisis is, the authors of this book teach how to deal with bullies. First by standing up for yourself. Being able to identify the four kinds of bullies that there are: the Belier, the Blocker, the Braggart and the Brute. And finally, getting rid of them.

The authors then move on to seeking help if you are unable to defuse the situation on your own! Wise advice.

They, the authors, move forward into how to make a bully-proof team in your office. Their instruction is geared more toward the managerial office person, but does go into working with your manager to make a bully-proof work place.

And lastly, how to create a bully-proof workplace and keep it. Changes have to come to hiring and firing policies, so you may have to work from the bottom up, or the bottom down. And if you have no success in changing your workplace, what your choices are.

Again, I think this should be required reading in earning a managerial degree.

I give this book Five Stars!

And a big Thumbs Up!

I also give this book my Highly Recommended Award!

Simple Strategies for Stress Relief
How to Reduce Anxiety, Regain Control of Your Life and Beat Stress the Easy Way
by Nathalie Thompson
a Kindle Book
© 2016 Nathalie Thompson
ISBN: 978-0-0048844-3-5 (ebook)

This is a well written, easy to read book available for Kindle. The author includes a free download of a second booklet Called Mind Shifting with the purchase of this book. There is also a free MP2 download of guided meditation if you are not versed in meditation.

Ms. Thompson covers such topics as What Causes Stress, her  Four Step Stress Reduction Process.  She covers what each stressor is: physical, psychological, environmental and social. And then she covers ways to work through, and beat, each one.

As a medical professional, I found the book covers each area adequately, yet speaks to the layman, without talking down to him.

I found the book quite helpful, and I give it Five Stars.

And a big Thumbs Up!

I also give it my Highly Recommended award for anyone who deals with stress routinely, and who doesn't?

Crochet patterns are well written and easy to follow. Garments include pantaloons and vests, skirts, scarves, shawls, sweaters, hats and even young girls clothing. Sizes include several plus size garments for larger women.

As a woman who adores this time era of clothing, I am in heaven trying to decide which garment I will make first! I can't wait to get started!

The Original White House Cookbook 1887 Edition

As most readers of my reviews  know, I am an avid cookbook collector. Therefore, when I received some money for a Christmas gift this past Christmas, I ordered this beautiful book.

Hardback, it covers 46 different areas of cooking and etiquette for the time period. Beautifully written, one must be aware before purchasing that this is written just as it was in 1887.

So what does that mean for the modern cook? Well, it means, no temperatures are given (other than a "hot" oven, a"medium" oven, etc.) Measurements may be something as simple as a "a pinch", or a "dollop". So if you are planning on cooking any of the recipes and don't understand the measurements, you may wish to purchase a guide for conversions. Amazon.com has several when you perform a search, some as low as $3.99. Or you can get a free one here. (Simply copy, paste and print it off.) You can also google for conversions if you like (I [prefer this method.)

There are no photographs of meals, but there are of the White House dining rooms, and the First Ladies whose recipes are included.

The book has gold impressed print on the front, and the paper edges are gold leafed. This makes a beautiful collectors piece. Or a gift for the cook you love!

I rate this wonderful old book with...

black and white bible, black and blue wife - Ruth A. Tucker

black and white bible, black and blue wife
My Story of Finding Hope after Domestic Abuse
by
Ruth A. Tucker
Copyright © 2016 by Ruth Tucker
Published by Zondervan, Grand Rapids, Michigan
ISBN  9780310524984

In my offerings of 'free' books to review, I am always allowed to choose those books I prefer. Those books that I choose usually are books that are of subjects I enjoy reading. This book was different. This book chose me.

From 1975 to 1990 I was in an abusive marriage. Like Ms. Tucker, I sought solace in the only way I could find. Through writing. I have kept a diary, (I prefer to say 'journal') for most of my life. They sit in a neat little row on my book case, as I prefer pen and ink to the computer.

For years after my divorce from my ex-husband, I had nightly, or near nightly, nightmares of being beaten, or emotionally beaten down to the point where I was less than human. Having married my husband now, I listened to a minister one Sunday morning who said that if we are carrying around this old baggage and we were "stuck" in the remembrance of that, we needed to find a way to "unpack the bags".

That resonated with me in such a way that the very next day I discussed it with my new husband. He encouraged me to write it all down, and pour out the hurt, in my journals.

And I did. "One Wing In The Fire" (self published 2008) was born. I didn't write it for monetary gain. I wrote it for those who were being physically and emotionally abused. I wrote it so that if it but touched one life, prevented one woman, or man, from staying in such a situation, it would be worth any humiliation I might have in the telling of the tale.

I have been blessed with many women telling me that the book touched them. And a few sought shelter and left abusive relationships because of it.

Ms. Tucker's book, sought me out. I saw it in my reading selections, and I left it there. The title grabbed me from first glance. But my heart told me, no. Don't read it. Don't choose that book. You don't want to relive that nightmare again.

But still, the book remained in the reading cue. It sat there until one day, I noted that there was but a single copy left for review. And without allowing myself time to rethink, I ordered it.

When it arrived, I devoured the book in a single sitting.

Ms. Tucker's debate was rambling, and at times I wasn't sure just whose side she was on! She repeatedly debates whether the woman is the head of her own body or not. Or rather, the man is the head, as the Bible commands us.

The debate is whether the Bible demands the man is the head of the woman's body, and can bring "punishment" or not.

I have poured my heart out over this scripture and find nothing to tell us that the man has charge of "punishment" over a woman. But rather the opposite. The husband is to honor his wife, as the wife is to honor her husband. He is to submit to her and she to him.

I have spent many hours, nay, years, contemplating and praying over the scriptures with this. And it is my firm belief that this is meant for couples to be complimentary of one another, and to be in an agreement with one another. It is for peace and harmony in the home. The argument is that the Scripture reads that the wife is to submit to the husband as the church submits to Christ.

My argument back is that Christ allows us to have free will. We are to choose to follow Him. Not be beaten into following Him. And as such, wives should choose to submit to their husband. Or rather to be in agreement with him. That does not mean that if the wife does something that he doesn't like, or disproves, that he should take physical action against her. And likewise, she should not take physical action against him!

I kept going round and round with Ms. Tucker, until I finally realized what she was doing in her writing. She was opening us up for debate. Opening us up to discuss physical and emotional abuse in a Christian home, as Christian brothers and sisters, without fear of feeling we would become ostracized from within our Christian societies for opening that particular tin of worms!

Are we, men and women, truly equal? Does God want us to be equal? What does the Scripture really say about equality among the sexes? And is "punishment" ever warranted? Should a woman (or man) ever stay in an abusive situation?

Ms. Tucker tackles these questions with bravado. She tells us about her own abuse, without the gory details. She gives us the facts. She was physically abused. And, like most good Christian women, unsure of what she should do. Until she felt she had no further course of action to take.

For myself, it came down to me being afraid that if he didn't kill me, I would one day kill him in self defense.  I prayed for the right way to end it. And God showed me the way, or rather handed me the way. I worked the night shift as a nurse, and came home one morning to find his belongings packed by the back door. Fifteen years and five small children from the time we married, he told me he had to go "find" himself. It was the kindest thing he ever did for me.

Again, this was not a book that I chose to read. But that chose me. And it has opened the door for debate and discussion, both in the home and in the church.

I give this book...

Five Stars
and a...

Big Thumbs Up.
I also give it my...

Highly Recommended Award.

This book is suitable for individual and group reads. However, I warn you, debates will happen, whoever you share it with! You can purchase the book here on Amazon.com It is available in paperback, MP3 format, and for the Kindle reader. I read the paperback. Believe me, you won't want to put it down.
